The purpose of these guidelines, which were first published in Anesthesiology in March 1993 and revised in 2002, is to facilitate the management of the difficult airway and to reduce the likelihood of adverse outcomes. Included is a difficult airway management algorithm.  The revised guidelines were published in the May 2003 issue of Anesthesiology.
