Considerations for Anesthesiologists: What You Should Know About Your Patients’ Use of Herbal Medicines and Other Dietary Supplements

Recent findings disclose that seven out of 10 herbal medicine users never tell their physicians about the herbal products or dietary supplements they are taking.  Most believe that since the products are “natural,” they must be safe.  The Committee on Communications has prepared a two-part handout based on what the literature currently says about herbals’ intended uses and possible physiologic interactions.
This first brochure is directed to the anesthesiologist and contains a chart of commonly distributed herbal preparations, their common uses, potential side effects and drug interactions.
